COMC Hobby Box - T-Rex and the World Champs

Still a little groggy from yesterday evening's My Morning Jacket concert in Boston. In addition to that, the rain that was in Chicago a couple of days ago must be here in New England now, because it's really coming down outside. I don't have the energy or motivation to think of anything too creative, so I might as well return to the Check Out My Cards hobby box. Here are packs 13 and 14...

Pack 13:

1995 Emotion Promo - #8 - Cal Ripken Jr. ($.25)

So far we've seen Will Clark, Ken Griffey Jr. and Jaromir Jagr Emotion cards. This Ripken promo is the fourth and final Emotion card in the lot.

1974-75 O-Pee-Chee WHA - #48 - Don McLeod ($.70)

Enjoyed some success in the WHA, played only 18 career NHL games. Tremendously awkward photo.

1986 Fleer - #341 - Wade Boggs ($.20)

Boggs' 1986 stat line...207 hits, 47 doubles, a league-leading .357 batting average, 105 walks and .453 OBP. Wow.

1994-95 Parkhurst Missing Link - #171 - Gordie Howe Scoring Leader ($.27)

In 1955-56, Howe notched 38 goals and 41 assists for 79 points in 70 games. It was a different NHL then. Only Jean Beliveau was more successful that season, with 88 points.

1959 Topps - #261 - Gene Stephens ($.71)

A few months ago I picked up the Heritage Buyback version of this card, now I have the original to go with it.

Mini:

2010 Allen & Ginter - #MM1 - T-Rex Monsters of the Mesozoic ($.35)

The Great White Shark wasn't the only top predator in my box. I could see myself going for this insert set. In fact I'll be featuring a couple more in the near future. 25 cards in all, T-Rex here is number 1.

Insert:

2011 Gypsy Queen - #WC4 - Denard Span Wall Climbers ($.25)

One more off the list.

One thing that annoys me about this card is that it's the same image used on Span's base card in the set. Lazy:

Pack 14:

1981 Fleer - #484 - Dave Winfield ($.21)

Many reasons to go for this card. My initials on the hat, sweet retro Padres jersey and wristbands...

1974-75 Topps - #242 - Len Frig ($.30)

And then there were 40...

2011 Gypsy Queen - #20 - Andre Dawson (Framed Paper #'d/999) ($.80)

Love the depth on this card. One of the better pictures in the Gypsy Queen set.

1972 Topps - #1 - Pittsburgh Pirates World Champions ($1.25)

I may never complete a 1972 Topps set, but at least I've got card number 1. This is a card I've wanted for quite a while, long before I thought of doing a COMC hobby box. It's slightly off center but is in really great shape. Does $1.25 seem too cheap? Well there is a gum stain on the back...

Good enough for now!

1992 Mother's Cookies Nolan Ryan 7 No-Hitters - #3 ($.35)

Ryan's third no-hitter was far from a perfect game. How about 8 walks!

Mini:

2006 Allen & Ginter Mini - #319 - Capt. Jack Glasscock ($.25)

This guy reminded me of the one on the 2011 A & G wrappers/boxes.

Insert:

2011 Bowman - #BB16 - Adrian Gonzalez Bowman's Best ($.43)

The only Gonzalez card in the box. I had to include at least one given how he's absolutely raking the ball for Boston this year. I've picked up a few more of his 2011 cards recently.

Pack 13: $2.73
Pack 14: $3.59
Running Total: $44.79

Coming up in packs 15 and 16 we've got another great villain, an NHL tough guy, and one of the most impressive one-man performances in MLB history.
